I 100% believe they should drug test for welfare. I dont care if someone NEEDS help and is on welfare. But if you are on welfare and can afford drugs then you dont NEED welfare. IMO.

Lovebug3 --- 14 years ago -

Good. If you can afford crack you can afford milk for your kid.

Exactly!

Little Miss Knowitall --- 14 years ago -

ITA with the requirement.

If I need to pass a drug test to get and keep a job, then welfare recipients should have to do the same to get and keep their benefits.

Did you know, in NC, if you have been convicted of any Felony, you are ineligible to receive some services?

I forget if it's medicaid or food stamps.

I agree!!

Totally agree!!!

I think its the medicaid deb cuz that was something they asked me...

I completely agree. I also think they should only allow welfare for so long. People should not be allowed to live off of welfare if they arent working.

I think she should have to prove thay they are actively looking for work. Like by signing up with a temp agency or something.

Or going to school. I think that it makes sense for people to go to school versus working at minimum wage if they can. Because even working minimum wage they will still be eligible for welfare so if they are going to school they are less likely to be on welfare long term. (there should be restrictions on it though just like with grants. You need to do X amount of credit hours and get your degree in a reasonable amount of time.. not take 8 years for a 2 year degree while collecting welfare).

Little Miss Knowitall --- 14 years ago -

What about those convicted of a felony possession or use, but are clean now and have been for years? Why would their children suffer bc they made a bad decision a while ago?

Children would be eligible, no benefits for the Felon.

MorganRose --- 14 years ago -

See but people scam the whole going to school bit. I personally know a girl with 3 kids, has everything paid for and enrolled in school to get a single mother grant, pocketed the money and never went. She's on every available public assistance program, and deals on the side. I think drug testing should be mandatory in every state. There's so many people who don't need it, just expect handouts because they got knocked up.

VanishingAct --- 14 years ago -

That is why I said theyw ould need to complete the degree in a reasonable about of time. Other restrictions could be put on like proof of going to school (ie: my friend gets help with daycare. To keep that help she has to mail in statements every month to get the money. They could have students qualifying for welfare mail in transcripts every so often)

VanishingAct --- 14 years ago -

Dealing doesn't mean she actually does the drugs so a drug test wouldn't put a stop to her side activities.

VanishingAct --- 14 years ago -

Also if she collected that grant and never attended school. Maybe I am wrong but with grants don't you have to have to actually take the classes or you end up owing that money back? It's not just a little hand out that they don't check up on.

It's not any felony - it's a felony related to drugs. Stealing a car doesn't disqualify you but smoking a joint does.

VanishingAct --- 14 years ago -

That retarded!!! If you can pass a drug test then it shouldn't make a difference if you were busted years ago! Stealing a car goes to show that you believe in stealing. Hmmmm.. maybe could translate into willing to accept welfare and work under the table. aka - stealing

The point in why they want you to not smoke pot and collect welfare is because pot costs money so if you can afford pot you should be able to afford food. But then in the same sense people also blow money on alcohol and cigarettes and get food stamps when if they gave up those two things they could afford food too so its just going to get messy. I agree with the drug testing but I wish there could be a way to monitor alcohol too. I had a friend that her house always had more booze in it than food growing up. I hate the idea of so many kids living like that. I dislike alcholics more than pot heads. Pot heads are usually nicer than drunks ;)

MorganRose --- 14 years ago -

Most people that smoke do have to pay for it. It's not cheap, like 30 for a dime bag. And most people are habitual smokers, that do smoke. If they can pay for drugs, they should be able to pay for the necessities for their kids.

Dusk2Dawn --- 14 years ago -

Why receive welfare but walking around with IPhones, etc. What cracks me up is people have the nerve to be mad! You can buy and smoke weed but your kids can't have the clothing and food they need, hmmmmmmmmmm. I have a cup!

I dropped food off at the food pantry and the people waiting outside to go in and get the food were overweight, smoking, with their nails done....explain that to me. The overweight thing could be medical, so whatever. But if you can afford cigarettes and your nails done you shouldnt need free food.

Who dropped you on your head? Fat people NEED to eat to. Are you kidding me? Matter a fact, poor people can't afford to buy healthy and that is how they get fat in the first place. Eating healthy is more expensive than eating junk.

As for cigarettes, I can halfway agree. These people are addicted and quitting isn't as easy at it sounds.

And, in ALL my time volunteering at the soup kitchen and the food pantry, I have never, ever seen someone with their nails done picking up food for themselves. I've seen social workers picking up food for their clients looking all night and what not.

Last, not everyone showing up for a food box is there regularly. Sometimes people who normally get through life just fine get into a situation and need help 1 damn time. Like, their motor blows and they have to put up their entire paycheck to get the car fixed so they can get to work and back.

Don't pass judgments on people like that. That sht pisses me off. I worked with the Salvation Army for 6 years or so... I've seen all kinds of crap. I've seen a few people abusing it but mostly, I saw people who NEED help, fat or otherwise.

Well you werent there with me were you...nope didnt think so.

Lovebug3 --- 14 years ago -

And I smoked for 7 years and quit the day I found out I was pregnant and havent smoked since. My husband quit when I quit- cold turkey. So if you cant afford cigarettes, you should quit. No matter how much it sucks.

Ja Ja Jacky (Mod) --- 14 years ago -

Would you like a cookie? I quit after years of smoking cold turkey also. It was the single hardest thing I have done in my life. Not everyone is as strong as I am. And for a long time, I wasn't strong enough to do it.

Lovebug3 --- 14 years ago -

What part of that sounded like I wanted a cookie?? Im saying people can quit smoking cold turkey. And if you have to choose between food and cigarettes you should quit smoking.

Ja Ja Jacky (Mod) --- 14 years ago -

No doubt that is what you should do. But it isn't easy. You think they WANT to smoke? Like I said, you sit there to pass judgment on everyone who collected a food box that doesn't fit your qualifications?

Lovebug3 --- 14 years ago -

I wasnt judging everyone! I was judging the person I saw that was smoking with their nails done. I donate food to the food pantry to help people, not to judge. But I think that person should really check their priorities.

Ja Ja Jacky (Mod) --- 14 years ago -

the people waiting outside to go in and get the food were overweight, smoking, with their nails done....explain that to me.

There ya go. There's your judgment. You asked for someone to explain it to you - so I did. Fat people need to eat too. While smoking is wrong, it's an addiction that these people need help to quit obviously or they would have by now and as for the nails... that was the one I didn't believe. I don't believe you walked up and there was a group of people with their nails done.

If ya saw one person, MAYBE. But you're assuming they needed help for themselves. Maybe they were waiting for a food box for someone else. Or maybe they were someones ride?
