BASE TRAFFIC DETOURS FOR JULY 11-13

Westbound Hwy 70 traffic entering Cherry Point next week will be detoured around the Roosevelt Blvd entrance to the Main Gate. Beginning Monday, railroad crossing repairs on the Roosevelt Blvd extension straight out of the main gate, will close that part of Roosevelt Blvd for up to three days, primarily effecting traffic approaching from and departing to the east (Newport and Morehead City). The main detour will direct air station traffic to enter the Cunningham Gate on Hwy 101, via Cunningham Blvd (near the Harrier on a stand display). From there, military and civilian police will direct traffic to ensure the smoothest transition of traffic onto the air station.

Traffic that is not traveling onto the air station will remain on Hwy 70 westbound through Havelock.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION:

Roosevelt Blvd will be closed to WESTBOUND traffic heading to MCAS Cherry Point. Detours directing MCAS inbound Westbound traffic to turn right at Cunningham Blvd will be established before the morning rush. Roosevelt will be open to local traffic only for access to those affected businesses. The Cunningham Gate will be open 0530-1800 during this construction. Westbound commercial traffic and those needing passes will be redirected, via the detour, to the Main Gate.

Jaycee St will also be restricted to local traffic only. Havelock Police, PMO, and NCDOT signal technicians will be present as necessary to ensure traffic flow.

Similarly, EASTBOUND outbound from MCAS traffic in the afternoon will be directed out of the Cunningham gate via Cunningham Blvd to US Hwy 70 EAST or down NC Hwy 101 East, detouring traffic from the Main Gate and away from Roosevelt Blvd. No right turn movement from Cunningham Gate will be allowed.

WESTBOUND traffic can continue to exit the Main Gate or Slocum Gate to go West toward US Hwy 70 (via Fontana Blvd) and toward Miller Blvd and Nine Mile Road.

THROUGH traffic should remain unaffected by this construction.

As Norfolk Southern finishes, NCDOT will come in to repave the section of road affected by removal/replacement of railroad infrastructure. All construction is expected to be complete by Wednesday, July 13. As soon as the road is opened to the travelling public, another notice will be sent to the media, those signed up for news releases, and on the City's website and social media sites.

Please pay close attention to posted signage and detours, as these routes have been calculated for efficiency. Attempting to circumvent the posted detour will result in additional delays. Please remain patient as the work progresses.
