When looking to find a great price by shopping yard sales or searching online, be careful not to end up with a recalled item that is a safety hazard to you or your children. Don Mays, our product safety director, points out the following types of products to avoid buying used, because of their potential safety hazards.

Do not buy used:
1. Cribs
2. Bicycle Helmets
3. Child Safety Seats
4. Children's Outerwear With Drawstrings
5. Toys (including jewelry)

People have to buy what their budget dictates. A perfect condition helmet, not having been in an accident, would be fine. If it was recalled, why is it for sale in the first place? Because nobody knows of the recall, you or the previous owner. Helmets are not registered anywhere, but must pass certain safety standards. Buy a brand new helmet, gets recalled, you still do not know. Many toys are fine used.

Consumer Reports:

Helmets deteriorate over time, as ozone and sunlight degrades the plastic. But most importantly, once a bicycle helmet is involved in a crash it will no longer offer the same level of protection as before. You have no way of knowing if a helmet was previously involved in a crash, so skip buying used bicycle helmets. If it comes down to saving money, know that you don't have to buy the most expensive helmet to be assured of its safety, cheap helmets offer the same protection. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? CHEAP HELMETS MEET MIN. STANDARDS, GOOD HELMETS EXCEED THEM

IS A FAIRY TALE

I think it has to do a lot with owner operation of the helmet...not the helmet itself. People don't use things properly and that is when bad things happen.

WHEN IT HAS A HUGE DENT OR SCRATCH, THAT IS OBVIOUS, MORE NONSENSE.

THIS COMPANY (Consumer Reports)PUTS AMERICANS OUT OF WORK, BY CALLING CHEAP IMPORTED CRAP AS GOOD AS AMERICAN MADE BOYCOTT THE RATTTBASSTARDDS, They helped to close the Bosch Factory with their bogus info.

The point of the article is, you DON'T KNOW the history of an item, so, buyer beware.

My parents are currently driving me CRAZY with their yard sale "bargains".

They've bought at least FOUR telephone/answering machine combos. NONE of the answering machines have worked. I have an answering machine sitting here, but do they TAKE IT? No, Dad keeps buying them...

gggrrr...

Yes, Deb and good of you to point that out. My point is Consumer reports is studied like it is the Gospel. We life tested Samsung and LG washer and dryers, side by side with Bosch. Amazing how soon and how bad the Korean products failed. Laughable. Yet, thanks to great Consumer Report articles that are lies, we are out of business. Luckily, the government allowed us full TAA/TRA support after our petition to them . God Bless America. Buy stuff made here when you can! It is better!
