hello, i remember when we were stationed here there were more great danes than i had seen in my entire life lol so i thought id ask here. my husband and I have been talking about adding a Dane to our family but want to be sure it is the right breed for us, so after researching things look good so far, my question for you is what are your cons to owning a Great Dane? Maybe something you didn't realize till you owned one? Are they drooly? I want to be absolutely sure it's the right fit so it will always have our home :) we have a German Shorthaired Pointer and a 2 1/2 yr old daughter :)

Great Danes are HUGE. It's obvious, but seriously; they're HUGE.

Also, consider a gastropexy at the time of spay/neuter. They're prone to GDV.

They are rather low energy dogs; big couch potatoes.

They knock over everything that is at their height or below. So it is like baby proofing your home. Nothing on the shelves at their level, nothing on the coffee table etc.etc.etc. They are like HUGE babies.

they can be drooly depends on how they are breed. most of them are. they have to be fed at a certain height to avoid the stomach twisting..they can not be left outside for long periods of time they like your couch they eat like a horse and are prone to cherry eye...here is a website for more info INFO

there is a great dane rescue group around here, maybe consider fostering one for some time before committing to one investing financially then finding out a dane just doesnt fit into your family. I had suggested the same thing to a co-worker who said he was sure he wanted one, spent a ton of money on a gorgeous pure bred dane and then got rid of her before she was one because she didnt fit into their lifestyle
