Ahhh its me --- 12 years ago -

No more junk food for me!

I've cut out all pop. Only water.

I need healthy snack options and supper ideas.

I've been having chicken breast and salads and those are getting old!

I'm trying to eat as many fruits and veggies as I can.

Any help appreciated :)

Popcorn. The stuff you pop with an air pop machine with plain corn is healthy. Add some salt. Walla. Healthy snack.

Salads, fish, protiens, fibers, water and nutz! Lol nutz.

The following websites have good recipes...www.graciouspantry.com, www.littlebshealthyhabits.com, www.skinnytaste.com

Libby --- 12 years ago -

As far as snacks, Greek yogurt sweetened with stevia, vanilla extract, and fresh fruit; rice cakes with peanut butter or almond butter, smoothies with fruit, yogurt, and almond milk; veggies with hummus or dip made from fat free plain Greek yogurt.

Have you heard of the Paleo diet? My family eats a lot of paleo meals. I like it because its nothing processed, my husband likes it because he can eat bacon and burgers.

I'll second the paleo lifestyle- I feel like a million bucks when I eat a strict paleo diet, but household wise we fall more into the primal category because I buy the girls organic (grass fed when possible milk and grass fed butter (it's great for a source of CLA which promotes fat loss), another good source for that is grassfed beef.

Those items are pricier compared to standard meats and dairy, but it helps you really rethink portion sizes and use in moderation.

Also if you're trying to lose weight you should eat very limited amounts of fruit. Although better than eating a snickers bar, at the end of the day it is still processed as sugar, and spikes your blood sugar and beats your pancreas up.

Look for foods high in protein. That is the best you can do to avoid hunger pangs. Also take the time to figure out your macros based on your body weight.

As for ideas:
Protein shakes can add a lot of diversity- you just need to find one not loaded with a million ingredients. Start exploring vegetables you otherwise wouldn't.

For rice in dishes we use cauliflower (you "rice" it in a food processor) This adds a million dishes. I made morracan chicken casserole with riced cauliflower. My husband thought it was extraordinary. Also mashed cauliflower. Spaghetti squash in place of noodles, or zucchini

There's tons of blogs out there now that can help with better ideas to mix things up.

My favorites are paleomg, 100 days of real food, and primal household.

Also look into the whole 30 challenge it's a great way to kick start into healthy eating habits.

It's virtually impossible to find grass fed beef/dairy products around Cherry Point, not to mention they're pricey. The commissary has started carrying organic pasture/grain fed ground beef. It's nearly $7 for a pound.

Another good paleo site is www.civilizedcaveman.com. He's a former Marine who actually just got out a few weeks ago.

Champ --- 12 years ago -

I agree it is a lot pricier, but I find the benefits and taste outweigh the cost. Box organix ( which I haven't used yet because I have a butcher here that carries it) is an option to get it. You can get it delivered to you as well as organic produces, breads, and grass fed dairy. My husband did ask me what I was going to eat when I don't have these items as accessible anymore.

Any chance you could find a farm within driivng distance that would sell you half a cow? We split a cow a few months ago with friends of ours and in the long run ended up being WAY cheaper than buying from the store- but we had to put up a lot up front.

Ahhh its me --- 12 years ago -

I've heard of paleo but not positive what it is.

Right now I'm around 220. I want to get to 165. I may still be considered over weight at that weight but that's where I feel good about myself and comfortable.

Ahhh its me --- 12 years ago -

My dad raises cows chickens and pigs. So all of our meat is fresh.

Champ --- 12 years ago -

The basis of paleo is going back caveman era, and what they readily relied on. It helps with sentivities and leaky gut syndrome etc which I think they say affects 30% of the population. Many things grains, dairy, and beans cause inflammation all for different reasons (google explains that better than me haha).

Anywho the paleo diet whole foods and omits: dairy, grains, legumes, peanuts, and soy. And rely on a high protein diet- meat, eggs, and healthy fats (coconut, avocado,)

A lot of people obviously initially lose weight from the carb restriction, but you will notice so many other things improving. Clarity, healthy bowel habits, it's almost extraordinary in my opinion how it positively affects someone.

You can slowly add things back in to see if they cause discomforts.

Champ --- 12 years ago -

I do want to add not everyone thrives on a paleo diet. Some simply need carbs (healthy carbs, but carbs) I think everyone genetics plays a huge role in what "diet" is meant for them. I think they say try 3 weeks to know if it's your body detoxing of junk, or you are simply someone who needs a larger carb intake.

Boobsy McNicehiney --- 12 years ago -

Honestly, any fad diet will work. For a period of time you will killlll it. But you can't be on a diet forever. Find something you can live with. Personally, I calorie count. If I want a damn Kit Kat I will eat it, but will have a lighter meal or snack somewhere else in my day. If I deprive myself of something that's what I want most and I will obsess over it.

Make simple, reasonable changes. Even if it's walking after dinner for 30 minutes. The more positive you feel the more you will want to continue. Diets = punishment. No thanks.

BOOM BOOM BOOM --- 12 years ago -

Taking out fats, carbs, protiens, fiber out of your diet will only cause more problems for your body. Diets do work but to a certain extent. You take out certain nutrients, including fats out of your boy and your asking for a negative change in one manner or another physically. Eat with a consious mind and ins something physical to do and you will loose weight. Period. End of story. It doesnt happen overnight. Thats why people get frustrated and stressed out. And we all know ehat stress does to our bodies.

Boobsy McNicehiney --- 12 years ago -

I eat stress :/

Champ --- 12 years ago -

I guess I'm odd I put paleo more in line with a lifestyle like being vegan than being a "diet".

It is what it is though- it might be a fad quick weight loss scheme for some, but I think the majority of the people who chose to eat this way, do it because it makes them feel better.

Grains wern't meant to be consumed regularly they became big in the great depression because it was cheap and easy to produce, it was not meant to be what it has turned into.

(also side note they have gmo wheat crops now. They say it's not being distributed, but Japan backed out on exporting wheat in from the United states because it was found, and I saw a picture of a box of mac and cheese imported into the uk talking about may contain gmos from the wheat- cross pollination.)

Cellulose cannot be digested by humans. Scientists have studied the human mouth and digestive tract and the conclusion is... We were mean to eat a diet of fruits, veggies, nuts, fish and pultry along with certain species of wild animal. Beef wasnt one of them! But dangit it sure does taste good!! Great now i am craving a Tbone.

Champ --- 12 years ago -

I have read people die with over 10lbs of undigested beef in their colon(also heard that's not true at all).

Fortunately it's not the only meat option out there. Unfortunately I only like chicken and beef. Thank god- chicken can be cooked 100 different ways.

Added why are you talking about cellulose?

Lovebug3 --- 12 years ago -

I don't consider the paleo diet a "diet". The paleo diet is more of a lifestyle like Champ said. I don't eat super strict Paleo but I use it as a guideline. If I want pizza I eat pizza, but the majority of the meals I cook are based around the paleo diet. I do feel better eating this way and I have lost weight as an added bonus. I also feel like crap when I eat a lot of processed junk because I am not as used to it. I am trying to lose weight but that is not the only reason I like this "diet". I really do feel much better eating cleaner.

Boobsy McNicehiney --- 12 years ago -

I don't know anything about Paleo, nor do I care. I was commenting on diets in general. If you can live your life on Paleo, good for you I guess? Just nothing I've ever bothered looking into.

Boobsy McNicehiney --- 12 years ago -

If I want pizza I eat pizza,

I think that's key. It is for me at lest. I tend to want the things I am depriving myself of.

Ahhh its me --- 12 years ago -

I have started working out. I bought 30 day shred by Jillian michaels and once I get in to a little better shape I will start running.

I've cut out majority of fast food and pop. I do have it once in awhile still tho. But trying to stay focused on eating healthier. Replacing chips for fruits and veggies as a snack.

It's just been really challenging. I have a husband who can eat anything and everything and won't gain anything!

Boobsy McNicehiney --- 12 years ago -

My husband is the same. So annoying. It sounds like you are on the right track. Just don't be too hard on yourself. It didn't go on over night and it won't come off over night either. Do you have My Fitness Pal? That has really helped me realize what the heck I put into my body and be more aware of calories. I'm working on it at least, but it's certainly not easy. I tend to fluctuate 10 lbs

The best advice that I can give to you from someone who struggles with weight and have had quite a few set backs over the last couple years and still going through my latest set back is to LISTEN TO YOUR BODY. If the hurt is a good burn.. keep on going, but if it is a sharp pain then slow down. I am queen of being OCD and pushing it TOO far to the point of injury. I really need to work on that and find my happy medium but I get ADDICTED to the happy endorphines that come along with working out so much that I go too hard too long and then get knocked down and out.

Water aerobics I highly suggest and Zumba.. but make sure with Zumba that you modify until you are strong enough to truly go all out. I hurt myself by not modifying a move and have been out for over 3 months because it was that bad. Don't worry if you are out running, walking, or doing Zumba and you see someone else going harder than you are. You are getting healthy for you and not in a competition with anyone else.

Same thing for food. If you are not as perfect as the next guy with your eating style but are feeling better then don't worry about what anyone else tells you about what you should and should not be doing unless you ask for their advice.

Ahhh its me --- 12 years ago -

I did get my fitness pal! Kinda scary how much calories I was taking in!

I went for a run last night! I couldn't run for long periods but I ran then walked then ran. I felt SO GOOD after the run! I give myself a cheat day where I can eat what I want just not overboard. I know I have a long road ahead of me but I think I'm finally on the right track.

BOOM BOOM BOOM --- 12 years ago -

So you broke your diet with a cheat lol even made an excuse for it

That why i dont diet...ever

Ahhh its me --- 12 years ago -

I didn't say I was on a diet. I want to become healthier and get into shape and eat healthier.
