So I am contemplating applying for a job at Lejeune and was wondering if anyone lives out here at Cherry point and drives daily to Lejeune and roughly what the cost of gas is.

Mapquest has this cool feature you can put in your make and model and it averages out the cost of gas for you!

Woo,

You're going to hate the drive everyday, regardless of the cost of gas.

Factor in an extra two hours to your work hours and see if it's worth it for you to commute to J'ville.

My husband has commuted to Lejeune for the last 3 years. We live in Cherry Branch and he works at hospital point (back of base). He drives a Ford Focus and spends about $100 per week in gas.

It is an exhausting drive.. That is for sure.. When we got transferred from CP to Lejeune we still lived at CP for almost 5 months so we had to trade in our Mountaineer for a much more fuel efficient Sonata and we still had to put quite a bit in the gas tank and sometimes after work my ex had to pull over because he would be so tired from his work day and then sitting in the insane amount of traffic to get off base made it worse. I would take the drive back and forth (during rush hour) a couple of times to decide how you really feel about making the drive before committing to a job.

Thanks everyone....Red I did not even think about the insane traffic at Lejeune at rush hour. I was just so excited about the opening for THE JOB. I suppose I should save myself the time of preparing all the assessment questions and wait till a position opens up here at The Point.

Hey! I mentioned the drive time first! 8^P

WooTang (Mod) --- 11 years ago -

Lol I wasnt thinking about the insanity that ensues over there when you mentioned it...I was just thinking the hour drive to and from. No amount of money is worth that aggravation

RMof2 (Mod) --- 11 years ago -

Yeah.. during rush hour.. it's insane.. I made the mistake (more than once) to go shopping on base and took too much time in the commissary resulting in me trying to leave base at the same time as the work crowd and it was enough to make me want to put my fist through the windshield (of someone else's vehicle) and there were accidents almost daily!!

you wouldn't have to leave through the main gate, though. Or even Piney Green gate. They both get really bad. You can leave through the 172 gate and it's not bad at all.
My husband can leave base and get home in about 30 minutes, during rush hour. We live on the other side of 24 Hubert area.
Non rush hour is about 20 minutes, so it doesn't add any time to his commute, relatively speaking. :)

It's still a long drive, though, and I wouldn't want to do it every day.

Just throwing that other option out there, that some don't always think about.

We left the comm one after noon and it took us 20 minutes just to get to the Marine Federal right at the end of Piney Greed Rd (still on base technically). The guy we were meeting, took him about 15 minutes longer since he left through the main gate. Craziness.

Oh yeah.. forgot about that gate.. I took quite awhile before we found that gate and then the last 9 months I was out there we lived in TT2 .. so we had to use the front gate.. even using Piney Green put us in terrible traffic on 24 either way.
