Is not something I ever gave much thought to because my ex husband had one on me and that was all that mattered. Now that I am divorced I am pretty sure he still has one on me but don't think he would use that money for my burial expenses if something happened to me and leave that burden on my parents so I am shopping around for a policy myself. Any advice on which company to go with? The expenses of my Grandpa's funeral and all of the corners the family had to cut because of such a small budget has me wanting to prepare in case something happens to me. I don't want to burden my family with worrying about money while they are grieving. I also want to make sure the kids are taken care of as well. My Aunt also died at 42 with 2 minor children and no life insurance policy and I know it has been hard on the family financially and the kids had to drastically change their way of life.

Why would he still have one on you?

RMof2 (Mod) --- 12 years ago -

Well.. I would think because if I died.. he would get custody of the kids therefore needing the money to take care of them? I don't know for sure that he still has it but he probably still does. He is really bad at updating stuff. His insurance policy is still lists me as the beneficiary because I have the kids and it will stay with my name on it until our youngest child is 18.

It makes sense, but from what I understand the relationship is hostile? I would be really uncomfortable with that.

Oh.. I am not comfortable with it at all..but I don't have a choice. He has not lost rights to his children so I would rather him keep the insurance policy than make him cancel it anyways because if he has money to take care of them then at least he won't be stressed financially and take it out on them. One of his major triggers when it comes to aggression is money or lack of money.

I prefer to stay alive at least until kids are 18 and much much longer than that though. lol. Just trying to prepare in case of a worse case scenario. Death is on my mind a lot lately is all.

If you're just worried about burial costs, you could get one for 10k-it would be super cheap. If you have greater concerns than that it'd be different. Make sure you look into the various types of life insurance and find the one that makes the most sense to you also find a company that's been around for awhile, don't "bargain" shop.

Yeah.. I definitely want a reputable company. Thanks for the tips. I am probably going to go for more than just burial costs just in case the ex collects the life insurance and decides he doesn't want to take the kids in (or proves to be unstable for the children) and they end up with another family member. So far the best price I have found so far is $100,000 for a 30 year term life insurance for $13.48 a month through mutual of omaha.

My parents have already offered to help pay the costs of the life insurance while I am going to school but I still want to get the best deal but not sign with a bad company. My mom gets hers and my dads as part of her benefit package through work so she has never looked into a private company. My Grandma (on my mom's side) gets hers through Fords as part of her retirement package so again never looked into private.

Check into Prudential or NY Life and ask the agent about a whole life policy. The policy will never expire (unlike term life) and you will also have a pension tied into it, that will not touch the face value of the policy.

At 50 yrs old, I pay $80 a month and have $75K of life insurance. When I retire, I'll be able to draw approximately $1200 a month. (I JUST purchased this policy through NY Life.)

As of right now I am just looking at a Term Life insurance policy because it is a lower monthly payment and after I start working then I will get a whole life policy. I was quoted though by Gerber life for a whole life policy for $50k would be about $35 a month. I will check what NY Life and Prudential offer. Metlife (who directed me to Gerber Life) said that I have too low of income for a policy through them and said that there are quite a few places I might not be able to go through because of my income level.

I know it's a beotch to get MetLife on the phone for anything! Don't go there! Or Hartford. They lie to all of their policy holders. Have to tried Afflec? I hear they are great!

Little Miss Knowitall --- 12 years ago -

Aflac isn't life insurance - it's a type of disability insurance.

Red,
The easiest way to get around the low income issue is to have your parents own the policy. They'll use their credit to get you a policy.

They can always sign the policy over to you later on.

Oh.. I didn't even think about that.. Thanks LMK!

Deb. I talked to an Aflec guy an he said we could get life. And some for the kids too.

Found it. I'm going to look at it when I go back to work.

I have My personal one thru Protective Life Insurance Company. I pay $60 every 3 months. Obviously you can adjust it to your needs and funds. My parents started it for me when I was born and they have one thru that company too so I know the place has been around for decades.
