Just got an email and there is going to be a "Public Hearing" about Slocum Rd and the "improvements" that are to be made.

It will be held at the Tourist Center on June 26th from 4-7.

I don't know what NCDOT is thinking, but I don't believe the "flyover" is going to decrease the incidence of accidents, but I'm not an expert.

The plan is to do away with the McDonald Down entrance/exit and have the new entrance/exit feed out of the neighborhood in between Wells Wayside & the west end fire house.

The flyover out of Slocum will be for LEFT hand turns only.

Right turns will still spill on to 70, as it does now.

The majority of accidents I've seen are people coming out of Slocum, making a right on red and thinking there is a merge lane on to 70.

The meeting isn't going to be a formal presentation. Rather, it's going to be the NCDOT having a display and speaking with anyone who decides to pop in to discuss the "improvements".

I really don't see this as an improvement, just shifting traffic to the Tucker Creek light/neighborhood.

I'm going to see if I can find the information online and post a link, if I find it.

Yea did you see the map to that thing!? Made no sense

BOOM BOOM BOOM --- 13 years ago -

The right hand turns onto 70 from slocum is where I see most of the accidents. Me being one of them. So they fix everything else but the problem. They aren't even done with the medians!

Little Miss Knowitall --- 13 years ago -

The start of construction isn't until 2015.

I would hope the medians are completed by then.

BOOM BOOM BOOM --- 13 years ago -

I'll be out anyway...

Boobsy McNicehiney --- 13 years ago -

I don't get why there are so many accidents there. How effing hard is it to figure out a traffic light?

Little Miss Knowitall --- 13 years ago -

Boobsy,

1) There should be no right on red at Slocum. I can understand why it would never happen because traffic would seriously back up on Slocum

2) The solid white line denoting the right turn lane gives a false impression that there is a merge lane onto 70 when exiting Slocum.

I don't think a multi million $$ "flyover is going to cut down on the number of accidents since the majority of accidents are from people making a RIGHT, not a left, OUT of Slocum, or Making a left INTO Slocum.

Yet, this flyover is addressing making a left out, which is the least of the accidents.

I got hit from behind bc the person wanted to speed up and change lanes right before the intersection. Hit me from behind. I made a perfectly legal right turn in the left lane. I think he was stoned anyway

Little Miss Knowitall --- 13 years ago -

A right turn in the left lane?

What the frizzo?

When making a right turn onto a multilane hwy, you don't go directly into the left lane...

Champ --- 13 years ago -

I know there is three lanes, but do two go right or two go left exiting base?

I thought the law was you are supposed to turn in the lane closest, and then use appropriate measures to get over.

(right hand turn would be right lane, left hand turn left lane) unless you are in a place with dual turning lanes (which i don't think you should be able to turn in the dual lane without the approriate light (but thats opinion not law based)

Little Miss Knowitall --- 13 years ago -

There's only 2 lanes coming out of Slocum.

Champ --- 13 years ago -

oh. haha, where am I getting a third lane from?

If someone is dumb enough to make a right turn on red in front of a car that has the right of way, not much else is going to help them.

Dontchawish --- 13 years ago -

When making a right/left turn you turn into the lane closest and then change lanes if necessary. Check the driver's handbook. It's online.

Vicky (Mod) --- 13 years ago -

The latest accident was someone making a left hand turn onto Slocum vice a right hand turn onto 70. But most are right hand turns towards New Bern. I think alot of the accidents are because people change lanes right before or in the middle of the intersection (which you should not do). I made a right turn onto 70 and was pulled over by a state trooper because he changed lanes after I made sure I had enough room to pull out (because he was in the left lane). I pulled out and started to speed up but he changed lanes and had to put on his brakes because I had not gotten up to 55 yet. He told me so. "The reason I pulled you over is because I had to put on my brakes due to your speed."

And, that's why there should be no right on red.

There should also be a turn signal light, just like at Walmart, Catawba, Chadwick and most of the other lights going eastbound. (I don't think there is one at Stonebridge)

We don't need a flyover in the middle of nowhere.

Boobsy McNicehiney --- 13 years ago -

There really shouldn't be. If people are too stupid to navigate it and there are always so many accidents, just make it a no turn on red.

Champ --- 13 years ago -

I'm not doubting there are more accidents in that location... BUT are there really a ton (like compared to other places where you turn on red on 70 towards new bern? because I can see a huge traffic issue if there were no turning on red, and I've never had an issue turning there (never anyone honk either like I did it wrong) there is so many times where 70 has very sparse traffic, and to wait for a green light would be grusome.

Vicky (Mod) --- 13 years ago -

There also shouldn't be lane changes just before or while in an intersection.... Especially when two intersections are 200 yards apart.....

Vicky (Mod) --- 13 years ago -

People are stopped at Walmart... the car in front of them doesn't accelerate fast enough in the "fast lane" so they whip around them just before or in the intersection of the Slocum gate. I say accidents increased at that light when they put the walmart light in.

Champ --- 13 years ago -

I agree here. I feel a solid line with "no changing lanes sign" could help a bit.

Little Miss Knowitall --- 13 years ago -

No one should be driving in the left lane to begin with.

The left lane is supposed to be for lane changes, not constant traffic.

Champ --- 13 years ago -

isn't it coming from new bern there a sign that says "through traffic keep right(editted)"? A similar sign comming the opposite direction may help too. I don't know I don't think the flyover is a good solution (or really even a solution at all) No turn on red might be, but not certain that's the best either.

Vicky (Mod) --- 13 years ago -

through traffic keep right... left lane clogs up with people turning left onto base....

Champ --- 13 years ago -

whoops that's what I meant. :) hahaha

Vicky (Mod) --- 13 years ago -

The NCDOT release forwarded this morning has the meeting listed at Thursday, June 26th. We have confirmed that the Havelock Tourist and Event Center is prepared to host that Citizen Information Workshop and Public Hearing on Tuesday, June 26, 2012 from 4 to 7PM.

Thank you.

That's for people who don't normally travel through a head's up that the left lane is going to come to a stand still and you're going to be trapped in traffic that is turning left.

Little Miss Knowitall --- 13 years ago -

Exactly, we don't need a multi million dollar monstrocity that is going to feed cars to the light at Walmart, making a nightmare of THAT intersection.

Jamie --- 13 years ago -

I may be confused, but coming out of Slocum, you can turn right via both right lanes. I can understand what Boom is saying.
I think a no turn on red sign might help, but how many people are still going to do it and claim they didn't see the sign?
And isn't it illegal to change lanes in an intersection? It was where I took Drivers Ed.
