President Obama is returning what amounts to a 5% pay cut and Defense Secretary Hagel is giving back the equivalent of 14 days.

President Barack Obama plans to give back 5 percent of his pay in a gesture

Key words: plans, to

Little Miss Knowitall --- 12 years ago -

Allen,

I highly doubt he won't follow through.

The president's self-imposed pay cut would be effective from March 1, when the spending cuts began, and would last through the end of December, an administration official said on Wednesday.

sharon --- 12 years ago -

I heard it will amount to like $18,000 - $ 20,000 or so a yr?

Vicky (Mod) --- 12 years ago -

I would gladly give 5 percent of my annual salary for a 4 million dollar Hawaiian vacation every year.

How about instead of 5 percent of his "salary" since he lives rent free, utility free, car and home maintenance free, he gives 20 percent of his pay for the next 7 pay periods and pays for all those things he gets for free.

Really?

He runs a COUNTRY. Even with all his "perks" he makes less than most Fortune 500 CEOs.

Really?

Yes, really.

Krystal in NC --- 12 years ago -

ugh giving our president props? Don't even get me started on that POS

Little Miss Knowitall --- 12 years ago -

Run for president. If you are elected, you can take $4 million vacations too.
Which, BTW, he really isn't on a vacation like most of us are, when we take time off work. Presidents are on call 24 hours a day.

Of course, once elected and even before the election occurs, your entire life will be put under the microscope and then you'll get to live in a fishbowl for at least 4 years.

What other president has ever given back part of their salary when the country has been in financial crisis?

sharon --- 12 years ago -

George W Bush took more vacations while in office that Obama , just saying.
Also anytime Air Force one is flown it cost a ton of money.

Just like he promised to fix NCs VA problems. Yea ok!

Maleficent --- 12 years ago -

I was pretty cool with him except some stuff but the Monsanto thing was kinda brought me to the other side. :/

What other president has ever given back part of their salary when the country has been in financial crisis?

Ross Perot offered to give the whole $400K back, but was not elected. He may have been a backwoods hillbilly, but had character.

Allen --- 12 years ago -

The 44th president of the United States, author and the most popular person in the world, Barack Hussein Obama II, has a net worth between $2,801,012 and $11,830,000, according to analysis of his 2012 financial disclosure forms.

He ain't hurtin'.

BOOM BOOM BOOM --- 12 years ago -

Plus I'm sure he never has to buy another car ever! Or his family. Lmao. I guess they won't buy food either since she is such the guru of gardening! Bahahahaha!

RMof2 (Mod) --- 12 years ago -

I think the president is entitled to a large salary. He has to deal with a whole lot more than anyone else. Have celebrities give money back too.. That'd be nice. They just entertain us and make more than the president for 1 movie! Just sayin'.

I don't care what his net worth is.. I don't care about his perks. If celebrities cared about bailing out our economy the way that they help people in other countries, we would be better off and then they can go back to helping out all over. Not that they are responsible for fixing the problems of our country but it would be an investment into their future as well because eventually people are going to stop paying for movies, music, and anything extra if our economy doesn't get turned around and these celebrities will eventually see the economy hurt them as well.

If they were going to "sequester us" because of failing to sign a budget, why couldn't they start that last October when they failed to sign a budget for the 4th year in a row...so my "5 percent" could be spread over 26 pay periods? Why do they have to take my 5% in 20 percent chunks? They haven't signed a budget in 4 years so why do they think they are going to sign one this October (thus needing to get the full 5% between now and 1 October)?

sharon --- 12 years ago -

RM for the Win!!!!!

Little Miss Knowitall --- 12 years ago -

Ask that to the house & senate.

That's THEIR job. President signs off on the budget once it's been approved by them.

Not approved? Deep cuts go into effect.

House & Senate played a game of chicken with the President and the country got run over.

The President is supposed to submit a budget in February. It is the law. He hasn't done it.

After the president’s budget is submitted, House and Senate budget committees are supposed to draft budget resolutions, frameworks intended to guide the spending process, which then go to the floor for approval.

Once adopted, the two resolutions go to a House and Senate conference committee, where they are reconciled and sent back to the respective chambers for final approval.

President has submitted a budget every year - house & senate haven't done their job...

+1 This country is due for a change from the two party system. It is outdated and doesn't work anymore. This country's current political landscape proves that.

The Republican and Democrats share equal blame. That it because they'd both rather argue against the other's point, than to agree with what would be better for our country just because of whose mouth it came out of.

It's time to completely remodel our political system.

SheIsAtItAgain --- 12 years ago -

Again, Obama has NOT submitted his 2014 budget. It was due in February. He is breaking the law and so far, only issued previews.

It doesn't matter how many links you post, he has not submitted his budget and is now 2 months late.

Multiple budgets have passed the House but dead weight Reid will not allow it to come to the floor in the Senate. He didn't even allow Obama's budget last year to hit the floor.
